How to remove duplicates in Google Sheets

Google Sheets has a built-in duplicate remover and a formula. Both match exact values only, so contact lists with messy emails need one extra step.

Show me how to do it myself or use the tool below.

Example

Ann@X.com, ann@x.com

1 row

Add your file

A CSV or Excel file exported from your store, CRM, email tool or spreadsheet.

Want proof nothing is uploaded? Once this page has loaded, turn off your Wi-Fi. It still works.

Names, phone numbers, emails and duplicates are fixed for you.

Download your clean file

Method 1: Data cleanup

  1. Select your data, including the header row.
  2. Go to Data → Data cleanup → Remove duplicates.
  3. Tick “Data has header row”, choose the column that identifies a person (usually Email), then click Remove duplicates.

Tip: run Data → Data cleanup → Trim whitespace first, so stray spaces don’t hide duplicates.

Method 2: The UNIQUE function

To build a de-duplicated copy on another sheet:

Unique rows
=UNIQUE(A2:F)
Tidy emails first
=ARRAYFORMULA(LOWER(TRIM(B2:B)))

Or do it all in one step

  1. In Google Sheets, go to File → Download → Comma-separated values (.csv).
  2. Drop the file onto the box above. Emails are cleaned, then duplicates removed.
  3. Download and bring it back with File → Import.
  • Catches emails that differ only by capitals, spaces or common typos
  • Matches by phone number when there’s no email
  • Free for up to 100 rows, and your file is never uploaded

Frequently asked questions

Why are some duplicates still there after Remove duplicates?

The values aren’t exactly the same: a space, a capital letter or a typo makes them look different. Trim and lowercase the column first, or use TidyRow, which also fixes common email typos.

Will TidyRow change my Google Sheet?

No. You download a copy, clean it, and import the clean version. Your original sheet isn’t touched.
